Cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, also known as plastic surgery, is the medical specialty dedicated to restoring function or form of parts of the body that may have been impacted by congenital defects, developmental problems, cancer or injury. Plastic surgery also includes surgical and nonsurgical procedures that reshape normal parts of the body in order to improve appearance.
There are three areas of practice within plastic surgery at UC San Diego Health System. They are
aesthetic surgery,
reconstructive surgery and
noninvasive dermatologic procedures. Our surgeons are specialists in all three of these areas — and utilize a combination of these areas for any single treatment plan. Aesthetic, reconstructive and noninvasive dermatologic procedures all fall under the category of plastic surgery, however, the procedures may use lasers, masks, minimally invasive techniques and a myriad of other “tools” — other than a scalpel.
