Combining state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical technology with the latest research and clinical trials, UC San Diego Health System offers the highest level of esophageal care.
The esophagus is a thin muscular tube behind the trachea and heart that connects the throat to the stomach. Just before entering the stomach, the esophagus passes through the diaphragm.
Esophageal disorders can result in heartburn, difficulty swallowing, severe weight loss and, in some cases, an increased risk of esophageal cancer.
A multidisciplinary team of surgeons, radiologists, gastroenterologists and oncologists operate the Esophageal Center. Our surgeons use a combination of laparoscopic, endoscopic, robotic and open surgical approaches to address these conditions.
