Hospital for Cancer Care

A world leader in cancer treatment, research and education, UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center is one of just 41 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation – and the only one in the region.

While cancer is the second leading cause of death for Americans, it is the #1 killer of San Diegans. As the region’s population grows and ages, a new state-of-the art facility is needed to meet the projected needs of the San Diego community. The patient population at Moores Cancer Center is currently growing 18 percent a year.

The Hospital for Cancer Care within the UC San Diego Jacobs Medical Center will allow expanded delivery of clinical care for cancer patients. The new hospital will coordinate care within a multidisciplinary Medical Center, with surgical suites in the same building.

Synergy, Discovery, Innovation

The hospital's location, adjacent to Moores Cancer Center and neighboring partners in the biotechnology community of La Jolla, will enhance synergistic opportunities for the discovery and development of new cancer treatments. It will enable UC San Diego Health System to build upon its international reputation for translational, bench-to-bedside medicine – helping to usher in an era of personalized medicine.

Family-Centered Care in a Healing Environment

The clinical setting is vitally important in delivering optimal patient- and family-centered care. The UC San Diego Hospital for Cancer Care has been designed with significant input from cancer patients and their families to create a healing, supportive environment. All patient rooms offer comfortable sleep space for a family member. Supportive facilities, including a fitness area, a family consultation room and a patient resource center, are planned for the hospital.

The addition of our new Hospital for Cancer Care will promote the expansion of the UC San Diego Health System-Sharp Memorial Hospital Joint Bone Marrow Transplant Program, which performs more than 135 transplants annually. This very successful partnership program has grown rapidly, and needs added hospital beds to accommodate the increasing demand in the region.

The Bone Marrow Transplant unit is designed with a separate, specialized air filtration system that will allow patients with compromised immune systems to move freely within the entire unit, instead of being confined to their treatment room.
